Since starting SFCM in 2005, I pretty much only went to country shows for the next 15 years of my life. Right before the pandemic hit, I made the decision to start seeing all the non-country acts I’ve been neglecting, and have seen dozens of amazing shows since then. While this is and will continue to be a country music website, occasionally I will sprinkle in some concert set lists and reviews of some of these non-country shows I attend since the journalist in me can’t quit my concert routine of tracking set lists.
Tonight I saw a phenomenal show starring Billy Ocean at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale! Growing up as a die-hard Miami Dolphins fan in the 1980’s, the only way to get the Miami Dolphins Song that they still play after scoring touchdowns was to record it onto a cassette tape off the radio. During the Dan Marino years, I would play it often. As was often the case with trying to record music off the radio back then, other songs would bleed into the target song, and for me the Miami Dolphins song bled into the opening notes of Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen.”
The nostalgia of those opening notes, combined with the nostalgia of many of his other hits from my childhood, led me to want to go see this show, and I’m so glad that I did. The 74 year-old Trinidad native that resides in Britain sounded and looked great for his age, often shuffling around the stage with better dance moves than I’ll ever have. He played for about 90 minutes, and didn’t waste any time with an encore going straight through his catalog of hits, a couple of covers, and one new song.
While I did attend the show alone, I did meet a sweet gal named Danielle sitting next to me that I enjoyed the show with. I hope she sees this and reaches out to me! 😀
