In the last two years, I have gone down deep into the hole of Texas/Red Dirt country music, which I like to describe as “90’s country being made today.” If there were a Mt. Rushmore of current artists of the sub-genre, Cody Johnson would firmly have a place on that mountaintop. It came as a great surprise to learn that he was booked for a South Florida show when I first got the alert for this show. It hasn’t been since the Round Up hosted Casey Donahew a few years back that we’ve had a Texas/Red Dirt act play down this way. And before that, the last one that I can remember was Pat Green some 15+ years ago and that was only because he had “gone national” for awhile thanks to the success of “Wave on Wave.”
For those that aren’t familiar with Cody Johnson, this is an artist that can sell out an 80,000 seat stadium in Texas, so it was a treat to see him and his opening act Ian Munsick in such a small, intimate venue. Munsick is an up-and-coming future star in the making who put on an entertaining opening set. Cody Johnson’s live show was everything as advertised. High energy, all over the place like Garth Brooks, feeds off the crowd like Eric Church, and is a proud patriotic American like Charlie Daniels. Well worth the price for a front row ticket!

This is where he took a break to go on an epic rant about the state of things in our country these days. He did a great job of hammering his point without ever making it about political parties or calling out names. I’m sure he does this at many shows and you can probably Google it to see what he has to say, but I’m guessing he’s not a fan of Joe Biden.
